Scientific method and how they are involved in my educational goals
I have an interest in learning how the human body works and I believe that we must learn about how our body works and the effects of things (food or drugs) we consume, especially in today’s age when there are many new pathogens discovered. I am not certain about my future career, but I know that I am interested more about molecular biology, and it includes the study of how cells react in molecular level, in the presence of foreign material or pathogens, or how drugs (antibiotics) work against bacteria, so we can develop a way to combat the bacteria. The study of the structure and behavior of the cells through experiment or by observation is important to derive new and meaningful information and create a useful conclusion.
We can obtain this information about our cells through observation or experimentation. The behavior of microorganisms can be studied under a microscope, and the effect of antibiotics on bacteria can be done on a petri dish, and we can learn more about our cells by studying them. It is important to continue studying the microbes because they are constantly evolving and due to the abuse of antibiotics, a resistant strain of bacteria are formed. However, because of the information about how some viruses (.i.e bacteriophage) that can infect bacteria, attach itself to the host’s DNA of bacteria, replicate itself, and, destroy the host cells, which can then spread into other bacteria, there has been the development of phage therapy. This is an example of how the information about viruses’ behavior inside a bacteria, can help us create a new idea of using bacteriophage to treat antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.
Similar to how the bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics, it also can learn and evolve so that it can resist the virus or get rid of it. It was found that bacteria can get rid of the virus by cutting of the gene segments with infected virus genetic information. From this, the scientist has developed a gene-editing method called CRISPR. Although gene editing in human is not allowed, because more research needs to be done about the efficiency of the method and also due to ethical dilemmas about its use, in the future, it can be used for various purposes like removing gene like cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia, and possibly as a cancer treatment.
In both of the above cases, there is a need to study and research for their discovery and also for the use of the information acquired from the research or observation, before being used publicly. The facts and information we learn about cells and their applications are found by using scientific methods. So the use of scientific methods and also evidence-based study is needed in the field of education that I am interested in.
